Surviving Zero-Click Search: Where Demand Goes When the Clicks Don't Come
If 60% of searches end without a click, traffic is no longer the only goal. Here's how to capture demand that never reaches your site.
The short answer
The uncomfortable truth of 2026 is that a growing share of your audience will make decisions about you without ever visiting your website.
The uncomfortable truth of 2026 is that a growing share of your audience will make decisions about you without ever visiting your website. AI Overviews and zero-click results answer the question on the page. That doesn't mean demand disappears — it means it forms somewhere you don't control, from sources you didn't choose.
The response isn't to mourn the click; it's to influence the answer. That means being present and consistent in the places the models read — your own structured pages, the directories and publications they trust, the profiles that corroborate your facts. If the answer is going to be assembled without you, your job is to make sure you're in the raw material.
It also means capturing intent at the edges. Branded search still converts: when someone hears your name in an AI answer and looks you up directly, that visit is gold — make the landing experience and the next step obvious. And owned channels (email, community) matter more than ever, because they're demand you don't rent from an algorithm.
Finally, measure what survives. Impressions and citations, branded-search volume, direct traffic, and assisted conversions tell you more about a zero-click world than raw sessions do. Optimise for being chosen, not just for being clicked.
